"The Repast of the Lion" (1907) by Henri Rousseau – A Mystical Jungle Feast

Henri Rousseau’s "The Repast of the Lion" (1907) is a mesmerizing jungle scene that exemplifies his signature dreamlike style. The painting portrays a lion feasting on its prey, nestled within a dense, lush forest filled with exotic plants and vibrant foliage. The dark silhouettes of trees frame the composition, while bursts of color from flowers and vegetation add to the rich, atmospheric setting. Despite the subject’s natural savagery, Rousseau's stylized approach and soft detailing create a sense of calm, almost mythical serenity. With its surreal, untouched wilderness and carefully composed details, this work captures the artist’s fascination with the exotic and his ability to transform nature into a world of wonder and mystery.
