Claude Monet's "Stacks of Wheat" Series – A Celebration of Light and Season
Claude Monet’s celebrated "Stacks of Wheat" series, painted in 1890–91 near his farmhouse in Giverny, captures the monumental grain stacks as symbols of sustenance and survival. Working in the field and refining in his studio, Monet explored the changing light and seasons, creating harmonious compositions that were groundbreaking in their time. First exhibited in 1891 at the Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris, the series was an unprecedented success, solidifying Monet’s place in art history. With conical tops breaking the horizon in autumn and snow-laden forms nestled into the landscape in winter, these paintings reflect Monet’s mastery of atmosphere and emotion. The Art Institute proudly holds the largest collection of this iconic series, offering an unparalleled glimpse into the brilliance of French Impressionism.
